A gut-renovation of a loft space in Chelsea NYC was altered to a one-bedroom-like apartment by building a 200sf mezzanine. The challenge was fitting a bedroom space on top of the kitchen and bathroom area, with the limitation of a 13 ft ceiling height. By locating all of the upper-floor circulation area above the kitchen counters and closets, and the sleeping platform on top of the kitchen circulation area, we were able to build an airy apartment. To avoid a weight-bearing column in front of the kitchen area, the mezzanine is suspended from the ceiling with the help of an embedded steel structure, The construction was completed within 16 weeks with less than a $100K budget.
